Four Great Reasons to Go Back to College
by Jamie Adams DaLomas
Just because you’re well-entrenched in your chosen career doesn’t mean that going back to college is out of the question. Each year, many adults decide to return to college and enroll in courses for a variety of reasons. The most obvious reason to return to upper level education is, of course, to advance in their jobs or with their current employer. Some just feel the need to learn more, while others simply enjoy the experience.
Yes, going back to school despite having a full-time job and a family or other responsibilities can be difficult, that’s absolutely true. Aside from the obvious benefits of getting back into college, I’ve compiled a list of some reasons you may not have thought of.
Check these out:
You Can Get Specialty Education on the Cheap
How much do lessons for certain activities cost in the “real world”? Plenty, that’s how much. If you decide to go back to college you may find that you can get lessons in many subjects that you enjoy — such as art, music, gold, tennis, and other hobbies — for a mere fraction of what months of private lessons would cost.
Big Discounts
Let’s not forget that college students can often be entitled to BIG discounts at merchants who provide relevant products and services. For instance, I saw one internet service provider (ISP) offering students half off the monthly subscription price for high-speed internet access. Another local pizza joint offered e-coupons for buy one get one free pizza to students only. And don’t forget that many online merchants offer significantly reduced prices on software (as much as 90% off) for the “student” or “educational” version of their products. These aren’t scaled down, limited versions, either.
Tuition Reimbursement
Many employers offer tuition reimbursement programs to their employees. That means in some cases you can take these college courses for free, once you receive your reimbursement payment at work. How does free education sound?
Setting the Example
And finally, let’s not forget one of the biggest benefits to returning to school: setting the example for others. This is particularly important for parents. If you have teenagers in the house who aren’t motivated or interested in furthering their education past high school, enrolling in college and completing coursework yourself is a great way to set a positive example. In some households, parents and children enroll in the same course of study together, offering them the chance to bond, to study together, to collaborate on work, and to possibly even graduate together.
So take these ideas into consideration when you start to think about going back to college. These days, thanks to technology, getting back into higher education is easier than ever before.
